Philadelphia-based artist Virgil Marti creates immersive, hybrid environments that draw on a variety of art-historical and pop-cultural visual resources—from graphic design, to abstraction, to interior décor. Instilled with shrewd humor, a unique ability to marry colloquial forms with high art and particularly keen attention to material and color, his works range from large-scale sculpture, to playful museum seating, to evocative “looking glasses” (wood panels carved in the shape of Baroque mirror and painted with intoxicatingly iridescent gradations of paint), to full-scale rooms that viewers are invited to explore.
In 2020, the Berman Museum will host an ambitious and immersive exhibition of Virgil Marti’s work, encompassing the entire museum and featuring both well-known works from the artist’s oeuvre as well as new, specially commissioned pieces.
