Founded in 1958, the museum collection of over 400 pieces of art work includes drawings, intaglio, paintings, photographs, pottery, lithographs, serigraphs, sculpture, woodblock and works-on-paper primarily by contemporary regional artists from Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
A sculpture garden is also on the grounds beside the museum.
