Thought of by many as San Diego’s “jewel box” of fine art, the Timken opened in 1965 and is home to the Putnam Foundation’s collection of European old master paintings including a Rembrandt, 18th and 19th-century American art, and Russian icons.
The collection originally traveled on loan to museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In 1965, the paintings were reunited, and 60 pieces are hung in their new permanent quarters at the Timken.
