The Museum’s permanent collection —more than 7,000 pieces— is comprised entirely of artist-donated works,. "As such, it is a truly unique collection that shows artists’ work through the lens of their own interests and perceptions." The holdings consist primarily of 19th- through 21st-century paintings, prints and drawings and sculpture.
The collections -- a varied body of work from landscapes by 19th-century masters to abstract paintings by modern and contemporary artists -- is often on view alongside the Museum’s special exhibits. The Academy mounts frequent special exhibitions.
The National Academy Museum's 5th Avenue location has closed, but will reopen in a new location "soon".
