WCMA houses over 14,000 works that span the history of art across time periods and culture, from ancient Egyptian, Assyrian, and Greco-Roman objects, and African sculpture to contemporary art.

The strengths of the collection are in international modern and contemporary art, photography, prints, and Indian painting. The museum is especially known for its stellar collection of American art from the late 18th century to the present. With the largest collection in the world of works by brothers Charles and Maurice Prendergast.
