The historic home (1823) which incorporates both Federal and Greek Revival characteristics, was the birthplace of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), and is home to the Lowell Art Association.

The permanent collection focuses on late 19th- and early 20th-century American representational art, with special emphasis on the artists of New England. Among the artists represented are Frank Weston Benson, William Morris Hunt, William M. Paxton, William Preston Phelps, Aldro T. Hibbard, and of course, Whistler himself.

While Whistler's original, iconic Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (also called Portrait of the Artist's Mother) hangs in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris, an exact scale copy painted by a cousin of the artist, Edith Fairfax Davenport, Apres James McNeill Whistler, Arrangement in Grey and Black (1906) is on display.

Members shows run in March/April, and December/January as well as a Quilt exhibition in August/September.
