The Illinois State Museum inspires discovery and caring about Illinois' cultural and natural resources and heritage. The Museum’s extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people, and art of Illinois.

Collecting focuses on materials, objects, and information that represent the State's most significant and natural treasures and foster a better understanding and appreciation of the character and diversity of Illinois

The Museum is headquartered in Springfield with branch facilities near Lewistown and in Lockport. The Lockport Gallery, at 201 West 10th Street in Lockport, features changing exhibitions of art created by past and contemporary Illinois artists and artisans. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, quilts, and other decorative and ethnographic arts are showcased in rotating, theme-based exhibitions augmented by interpretive materials.
