This exhibit will explore the career of artist Ailleen Shannon (1888-1964), featuring landscapes and portraits in oil, pencil, and pastel from 1914 to 1950, as well as earlier sketches and calligraphy by the artist.
Ailleen Philips Shannon was born in Gillsburg, Mississippi in 1888. She studied fine art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Julienne Academy in Paris, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Ailleen and her husband, Edmund Shannon, moved to Las Cruces in 1925. A member of the bourgeoning art scene on Las Cruces, she exhibited her work in shows around the United States, while she raised her children and was active in social groups within community.
